KSC Fitness Center Internship Program
Two Internships Available!

Corporate Fitness
Adapted Physical Education

The KSC Fitness Centers offer an Internship Program designed to provide a valuable learning experience in a corporate fitness setting. Activities and work assignments will be based on the student's specific interests, knowledge and background. A wide variety of opportunities in fitness, wellness and nutrition will be available to the participant in this program.

KSC Fitness Center Philosophy

The Fitness Centers were created to:
  • Increase KSC employee awareness of the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Direct and motivate employees through the process of lifestyle change.
  • Create a supportive environment for positive lifestyle choices.

Our philosophy is well grounded in research which indicates adherence to a healthy, active lifestyle is positively associated with improvement in self-perceived quality of life. The KSC Fitness Centers' objective is to enable employees to experience these benefits by reaching a high level of personal health.

Activities in which the intern will be involved:

Fitness assessments

  • Body composition analysis
  • Girth measurements
  • Sub-maximal VO2 testing
  • Flexibility
  • Muscular endurance
  • Administering PAR-Q forms

Exercise prescription

  • Personal counseling and program design.
  • Implementation of exercise programs.
  • Equipment use/instruction.
  • Observation and participation with exercising employees.

Group exercise classes

  • Participation in classes offered.
  • Instruction of classes, if applicable.

Wellness programs.

Observe and participate in wellness-related lectures, seminars and workshops, such as, but not limited to:

  • Stress management
  • A variety of fitness related topics
  • Back safety
  • Desktop Yoga TM
  • Pre- and post-natal exercise
  • Strength training for specific populations
  • Metabolic diseases and exercise
  • Heart disease

Special Events and Outreach

  • National Employee Health and Fitness Day - Spring / Summer Semester
  • Indoor Triathlon - Summer and / or Winter Semesters
  • Intercenter Run (2 mile, 5K and 10K) - Fall Semester
  • Safety and Health Day - Fall Semester
  • Twelve Days of Fitness - Fall Semester
  • Local education outreach programs involvement
  • Extra events and programs available per interns' creativity and initiative

Motivational Programs

  • Promote and monitor various motivational programs offered at KSC.
  • Help create and plan a new motivational program for employees at KSC.

Health Education

  • Design an educational bulletin board to revolve around a health topic.
  • Create a health and wellness educational website article
  • Write two brochures about a health / wellness / fitness topic of choice.
  • Research and write a scientific paper on a topic of your choice. Later present to aerospace physicians.
  • Participate in various outreach programs around KSC.
  • Presentations to Spaceport Employees

Administration

  • Record-keeping, filing.
  • Data entry.
  • Reception, service desk management.

Designation of Candidate

Any student enrolled as a junior or senior in an exercise / fitness / wellness related course of study in a university may apply. Selection for internship with the KSC Fitness Centers requires review of the student's application packet (see application requirements below). If these documents reflect a sincere academic and personal interest, a personal interview will be requested. Potential interns must be available for a minimum of twelve weeks working 40 hours per week. (480 hours). If your school requires candidates to complete more hours, the KSC Fitness Center is willing to accommodate.

Compensation

This program is considered to be a public service to benefit and expand the educational experiences of students enrolled in physical education, exercise physiology, nutrition, fitness, or health related disciplines. Students can receive credit as part of their curriculum at an accredited college. Students will encounter tours and educational experiences that only employees of the Kennedy Space center can be part of. Such tours include:

No financial compensation will be conferred.
